What is Drusy?

The most asked question I encounter is “What is drusy?” If you’ve ever seen the inside of a geode that’s covered with a sparkling carpet of crystal, that’s drusy, more specifically, it is the natural crystallization of a rock. Probably the most common drusy is quartz, which can be vapor-coated with various materials, such as real gold and platinum, or the metal titanium, which comes in different colors. Natural drusy can be white, or come in a variety of colors. Also naturally occurring is Rainbow Pyrite drusy, which comes in a rainbow of colors. These and other natural colors arise from the minerals on which the crystals are based. The crystals flash a thousand points of light as the stone is moved. In some drusies, the color underlies clear crystals, while in others, the crystals themselves are colored.

Drusy is not crumbly and does not fall apart under normal use, but it’s not recommended for rings or bracelets because sharp knocks can damage the surface. Restore the sparkle of any drusy by swishing the piece through warm water with dishwashing liquid, rinse in distilled water, and dry with a blower or hair dryer.

Drusy is a naturally occurring gemstone with a textured crystal surface. This stone comes in many colors and from all of over world as it is created by micro-crystals forming on a matrix. Some of the natural colored drusys are green uvarovite garnet from Russia, pink cobalto calcite from the Congo, hemimorphite zinc, black psilomelane, rainbow hematite and rainbow pyrite drusy. While not a naturally occurring color, the titanium coated drusys, as featured here, are incredibly striking.

The quality of a drusy is dependent upon a few key items, such as color saturation, crystal size, purity or any visible flaws and crystal coverage. Know Your Stones – Larimar!

Larimar is a rare stone found only in the Dominican Republic. Because it is only found in the Dominican Republic, larimar is difficult to find outside of the Caribbean.

Many times the coloration will be light or deep blues and white, though sometimes it can be a green-blue color. The quality grade of larimar is determined by the coloration; the deeper blues and more intense contrasts 0f whites, the higher the quality.
